Young Thug’s release from prison hasn’t been all celebration and cheers, especially for his father, Jeffery Williams Sr.
Williams Sr. is outspoken about what he sees as disingenuous support from the hip-hop community now that his son is free. The Atlanta rapper’s prolonged incarceration for the YSL RICO case didn’t see the same level of backing.
In a candid podcast appearance, Williams Sr. questioned where these rappers were during the 29 months his son was behind bars. He called their recent overtures towards his son opportunistic and lacking authenticity.
“We got all these rappers and everybody trying to find Young Thug,” he expressed. “They want to talk to Young Thug, they want to this, that, and the other. Where your a** been for 29 months? Why y’all a** ain’t been out there protesting for his constitutional rights being violated?”
His frustration is palpable as he perceives many are eager to be associated with Young Thug now for clout, having been silent when they could have offered real support.
Williams Sr. didn’t just stop there. He specifically mentioned how others involved in the YSL RICO case, particularly Atlanta artists, needed support too. He argued that his son would have done the same for them.
One notable name he called out was T.I., who he claimed didn’t organize an event in support of Young Thug despite being asked. Yet, soon after Thug’s release, the two were seen together. This contradiction seemed to irk Williams Sr. as he questioned the genuineness of such public displays.
Ultimately, while Young Thug hasn’t personally weighed in on the matter, his father’s plea for honesty and real support resonates deeply. Until Thug himself speaks, the true nature of these relationships remains ambiguous.
Jeffery Williams Sr. is calling for more than just surface-level support. He seeks genuine action and advocacy. The onus is now on the community to prove the depth of their loyalty and friendship.
