Consequence has dropped a surprise for hip hop fans by sharing his unreleased verse from the track “They Say” by Common and Kanye West. He took to Instagram with this unexpected treat, revealing details about why his verse never made it to the final release.
Consequence, with a photo of the G.O.O.D. Music logo, on Instagram, spilled the beans about his track that didn’t make it to the official release of Common’s 2005 album, ‘Be’. He shared, “We was supposed to do a video with the version with me on it but it never happened…” However, some fans quickly pointed out that this track wasn’t entirely new to everyone; it had been heard on a leaked version of the album.
Die-hard fans couldn’t help but recall the unreleased verse. “Real ones heard this on the mixtape back in the day,” one fan commented, reminding everyone of those bootleg copies circulating the community.
Consequence’s journey in music has been quite a rollercoaster. After making waves with his debut ‘Don’t Quit Your Day Job!’ in 2007, he took a long hiatus, only returning with his 2017 EP “A Good Comeback Story”. He finally dropped his second album “Nice Doing Business With You” earlier this year.
In a candid chat on the Toure Show, Consequence opened up about his disappearance from the music scene. He explained that a record deal with Motown fell through because, amid his success at Urban Radio, Kanye’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the VMAs caused a ripple effect. Anything associated with Kanye, including his track “Whatever You Want” featuring Ye and John Legend, lost traction.
Consequence clarified, “It didn’t get shelved because it was out, but it just lost all momentum.” Only “Run This Town” continued to get airplay, leaving Cons’s track to climb without a push. He added, “Anything with Kanye at that time, that’s how GOODFridays ended up happening,” referring to how Ye had to release music directly to fans.
While Consequence’s verse didn’t make the cut back in the day, it has found new light, giving fans a glimpse into what might have been. It’s a reminder of the turbulent yet compelling journey of artists in the music industry.
