Tory Lanez is speaking out about having to unceremoniously end his ‘Prison Tapes’ series. The sudden stop, he claims, is part of a larger conspiracy.
As previously reported, the singer/rapper’s studio equipment was seized during a raid at the California Correctional Institution, where he’s serving a 10-year sentence for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
The news was confirmed by Ceasar McDowell, CEO of Unite the People and a chief deputy on Lanez’s legal team. Prison officials informed him that inmates are forbidden from having recording devices for various reasons.
Lanez had launched ‘Prison Tapes’ in July and managed to release nine songs recorded behind bars, along with several other previously unreleased tracks.
Taking to Instagram, Lanez expressed that he believes his cell was raided because the ‘higher ups’ discovered his tapes were helping other inmates obtain freedom.
‘Since day one, I’ve seen minorities receive the most cruel, illegal, and unfair punishment,’ Lanez wrote. He shared how he planned to record music in prison and use the proceeds to fund legal representation for inmates.
Lanez says that although the project has stopped, his overall plan remains intact. Since July, he claims to have provided legal help to 472 inmates and reopened 476 cases.
He concluded by sharing that he will name this effort ‘The Hands of God Project’ and warned that if anything happens to him, it’s because he was trying to revolutionize the end of mass incarceration.
When introducing the series, Lanez revealed he had found a way to record music over the jail phone and still keep professional quality. He boasted about the accomplishment on Instagram, excitedly stating, ‘It’s over. I done cracked the code, man!’
He announced plans to drop new music weekly from prison, sharing that, ‘no matter where they put me, they can’t lock down my spirit, my ambition, my soul, my passion, nor my destiny!’
Despite the abrupt halt, Lanez remains committed to helping inmates and pushing for change.
