Sexyy Red’s ‘Get It Sexyy’ has just gone gold, marking a major milestone for the St. Louis rapper. But what fans might not know is the emotional backstory behind the seemingly upbeat track.
On August 13, ‘Get It Sexyy’ was officially certified gold. To celebrate, Sexyy Red took to Instagram the next day to share an unexpected side of the song’s creation.
Despite its celebratory vibe, ‘Get It Sexyy’ was born out of a difficult time for the rapper. She was dealing with postpartum depression shortly after giving birth and felt incredibly low.
Recalling the night the song was made, Sexyy Red wrote, ‘The night get it sexyy was made I was goin thru a lot just had my baby felt depressed and was goin thru postpartum.’
Her Miami team left her alone in the studio to write, but she found herself crying and reflecting on life. Feeling overwhelmed, she asked to be sent back to St. Louis to be near her loved ones.
Things took a positive turn when she invited her sisters and friends to a studio session back home. With blunts, bottles, and food, the atmosphere changed completely, giving her the boost she needed.
‘I came out wit GET IT SEXYY GET IT SEXYY it really was ah confidence booster for me,’ she continued. ‘We was so turnt all my sadness was gone I love my family period.’
Adding a lighthearted note, she revealed, ‘I was moanin in the song cause my h0 was behind me humpin me while I was recording.’
On social media, Sexyy Red also engaged with fans who joked about a doppelgänger looking like a more refined version of her. One fan noted, ‘You look like Sexyy Redd if she went to college & majored in physical science.’
Sexyy herself joined the fun, retweeting and adding her own twist: ‘Sophisticatedd Red?’
Sexyy Red’s story behind ‘Get It Sexyy’ is a testament to overcoming tough times and finding confidence in community.
