ScHoolboy Q is fiercely pushing back on recent comments made by Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin. Rubin, while defending his friend Meek Mill, claimed that there is a troubling pattern of ‘Black-on-Black hate’ within Black culture. These remarks quickly sparked controversy and heated responses from figures like ScHoolboy Q.
Appearing on The Breakfast Club, Michael Rubin voiced his frustrations over the rumors surrounding Meek Mill’s sexuality. ‘When I see the narrative around Meek, there’s not one gay bone in his body, so why do people want to lie about that?’ Rubin questioned.
He went on to express his disdain for what he perceives as Black people tearing each other down. ‘Look, I’m just being blunt because it’s me. It’s the one thing I’ve learned about Black culture that I don’t like: Black[-on-Black] hate. It’s horrible.’
Rubin, who is well-connected with celebrities like JAY-Z, Travis Scott, and Lil Baby, elaborated further. ‘You guys correct me if I’m wrong. I think there’s a little bit of a Black culture of, like, it’s Black hate-on-hate. It’s like the Black judge that Meek had that hated on him and wanted to go extra hard on him. I think it’s terrible. I think it’s culturally wrong.’
After the interview, clips of Rubin’s comments started circulating on social media, catching the attention of ScHoolboy Q. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the rapper did not hold back. ‘Brah…… I’m cool on this app. This shit outta control, dog,’ he posted, adding, ‘NO SUCH THING AS BLACK ON BLACK ANYTHING WTF.’
In a more critical post, which he later deleted, ScHoolboy Q wrote: ‘YOU KNOW WAT I DONT LIKE ABOUT U N-GGERS? I HATE WHEN U N-GGERS BE ACTING LIKE N-GGERS.’ He later explained his decision to remove the post: ‘Dat do look crazy don’t it….ill delete it.’
Rubin’s interview also generated buzz for other reasons. He mentioned that he banned Kendrick Lamar’s song ‘Not Like Us’ from his July 4th white party out of respect for Drake, who was attending the event. ‘Drake’s been my friend for a long time. I’m not gonna invite him and then have… Look, he’s obviously going through a little bit of a battle right now. I’m not gonna have him come there and [be in battle mode].’
Rubin confirmed that it was entirely his decision and not influenced by Drake. Despite his intentions, the song did make an appearance during a pre-party barbecue. ‘The day before, we had a small barbecue that turned from 30 to 200 people. When they turned the music on, they put [the Spotify playlist] RapCaviar on and ‘Not Like Us’ came on. I’m like, ‘Get that off!’ [Drake] was pulling up soon.’
Michael Rubin’s remarks have certainly stirred the pot, leading to strong reactions from notable figures like ScHoolboy Q. As debates on these cultural issues continue, it’s clear that opinions are deeply divided.
