In a recent documentary titled ‘Karma: A Daughter’s Journey,’ Buku Abi, R. Kelly’s daughter, opens up about a traumatic experience she alleges occurred when she was just eight or nine years old. She claims that one night she awoke to find her father touching her and pretended to be asleep, a moment she describes as life-changing.
R. Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, addressed these allegations on Ashleigh Banfield’s show Friday. She suggested that Abi’s memories might be “distorted and contaminated.” Bonjean emphasized, “People sometimes come to believe things based on having distorted and contaminated memories.” According to her, this could especially be true for children, influenced by their mothers.
Bonjean pointed out that a version of Abi’s accusation was initially made by Abi’s mother and was investigated by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. At the time, R. Kelly was already under criminal investigation. The department concluded that the allegation was unfounded.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Bonjean said they haven’t yet decided on any legal action regarding Abi’s claim. She conveyed that Kelly is distressed, stating, “He is very upset. He’s angry. But of course, he loves his children.”
Meanwhile, Abi, born Joanne Kelly, bravely shared her perspective in the documentary’s trailer, revealing, “He was my everything. For a long time, I didn’t even wanna believe that it happened.” Her emotional disclosure adds another layer to the public’s understanding of their strained relationship.
