At Michael Rubin’s July 4th Hamptons bash, there was one house rule everyone had to follow: do not play Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us.’ Here’s why.
- Kendrick Lamar’s diss track ‘Not Like Us’ was banned at Rubin’s party.
- Drake’s close friend Rubin wanted a drama-free event.
- The song accidentally played during a pre-party BBQ.
- Fans mocked Drake online after seeing him at the party.
Kendrick Lamar’s track ‘Not Like Us’ was off-limits at Michael Rubin’s fancy July 4th party because Drake, who was attending, is the subject of the diss. Rubin confirmed this on The Breakfast Club, saying he didn’t want any drama at his event due to Drake’s ongoing feud.
Rubin explained that he has been friends with Drake for a long time and that he felt it was inappropriate to play music that would put his friend in a tough spot. ‘He’s obviously going through a little bit of a battle right now,’ said Rubin.
Despite Rubin’s best efforts, ‘Not Like Us’ accidentally played during a smaller BBQ the day before the big event. The song came on while a Spotify playlist, RapCaviar, was playing. Rubin quickly had it turned off as Drake was due to arrive soon.
Even with Rubin’s rule, fans didn’t hold back in poking fun at Drake online. One Instagram photo, shared by Rubin, showed Drake looking stressed, and the comments were filled with jokes. ‘Drake aged like 20 years since the beef,’ one person commented.
The jokes and online banter came just as Kendrick Lamar released his highly anticipated video for ‘Not Like Us,’ adding fuel to the fire between the two rappers.
In the battle of Drake vs. Kendrick, even party playlists aren’t safe.
