Memphis Bleek is eager to have his longtime friend and mentor, JAY-Z, feature on his new single. The track, titled “Bands Up,” has been gaining traction since its release on July 12. Fans are excited, and one even took to social media to suggest that Bleek might be able to bring JAY-Z out of his semi-retirement for a verse.

“@memphisbleek might be the one to bring Hov outside for a verse. I know he heard that second half of ‘Bands Up’ 🔥,” a supporter wrote on X. Bleek, catching wind of the post, retweeted it and added, “I’m on his neck for one, trust me.”

The history between Memphis Bleek and JAY-Z dates back to their childhood in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects. They first collaborated on the song “Coming of Age” from JAY-Z’s 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt. JAY-Z, in his book Decoded, shared how he challenged Bleek to learn a verse in just 24 hours, which Bleek nailed, solidifying their mentor-apprentice relationship.

After their initial success, Bleek and JAY-Z continued to work together, producing a sequel titled “Coming of Age (Da Sequel)” in 1998. Bleek remained a key player on several of JAY-Z’s subsequent albums, including Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter and The Blueprint 2. However, a third installment to their “Coming of Age” series has yet to materialize.

It’s been seven years since JAY-Z’s last solo release, 2017’s 4:44. This hiatus is the longest of his career, leading many to believe that JAY-Z now prioritizes quality over quantity. Nevertheless, there’s hope that Memphis Bleek might inspire him to drop a new verse, rekindling their collaborative magic.

Only time will tell if Memphis Bleek can bring JAY-Z back to the mic for another iconic track.
