Lil Yachty made a surprising confession during his appearance on the latest episode of the Flagrant podcast. The rapper revealed he only recently listened to JAY-Z’s most iconic albums.
When co-host Alexx Media asked why JAY-Z wasn’t on Yachty’s list of dream features, the Atlanta native dropped the bombshell. “I listened to The Black Album for the first time like three days ago,” he admitted. “And then I listened to Reasonable Doubt. Aaaand – I think that the Reasonable Doubt album was better in my opinion. He’s an insane lyricist. I’m not a big fan of like, De La production – that type, that sound.”
Lil Yachty continued to praise JAY-Z’s lyrical prowess, saying, “I think he’s sick. I think the shit he talks about is like shit most people never actually get to experience in life.” However, his late exposure to JAY-Z’s music might explain why the legendary rapper doesn’t feature in his top collaborations wish list.
The confession wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Last year, on his podcast A Safe Place, Yachty had made waves by comparing JAY-Z and DaBaby’s verses on Kanye West’s song “Jail.” “The song ‘Jail’ with Kanye West,” Yachty had started. His co-host, MitchGoneMad, quickly added, “The one with the greatest rapper ever on it and the one with DaBaby on it.”
In a bold statement, Yachty shared, “In my personal opinion, I think DaBaby had a better verse. I know the conversation of JAY-Z versus DaBaby is insane, but I honestly think his verse was better.” Although this opinion might seem controversial, it’s clear Yachty isn’t afraid to express his unique perspective.
Mitch even joked about DaBaby being able to knock out Hov, which Yachty responded to with a laugh and a dismissive, “Who gives a fuck.”
In a bit of history, Kanye West’s song “Jail” originally featured JAY-Z when it was released in August 2021. A few days later, “Jail Pt 2” came out with DaBaby and Marilyn Manson. It’s possible that hearing DaBaby’s verse made a bigger impression on Yachty than JAY-Z’s did.
