Lil Wayne recently broke his silence about not being selected for the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in his hometown of New Orleans. He candidly admitted it “hurt a lot” that the NFL chose Kendrick Lamar over him.
The rapper took to Instagram to share his feelings. Speaking solemnly, Wayne thanked everyone who supported him, saying their words felt like arms holding him up. “I had to get strength enough to do this without breaking,” he shared.
Wayne opened up about his heartbreak and disappointment, blaming himself for getting his hopes up. He confessed, “I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown… I thought that was nothing better than that spot and that stage in my city, so it hurt a whole lot.”
In his heartfelt message, Wayne also acknowledged the encouraging words from his fans and peers. He said, “Y’all are amazing. It made me feel like shit not getting this opportunity, but you guys reminded me that I ain’t shit without y’all… and that’s an amazing reality.”
Wayne concluded by admitting, “It broke me and I’m just trying to put me back together. But my God, have you all helped me. Thanks to all of my peers, my friends, my family, my homies… I really appreciate that.”
Several artists, including Birdman, Juvenile, and Boosie Badazz, expressed their disapproval over the decision. Nicki Minaj was particularly vocal, blaming JAY-Z and calling the decision spiteful and egotistical.
Cam’ron echoed Nicki’s sentiments, suggesting on his talk show that it was owed to past issues between JAY-Z and Wayne. “This is payback. It’s ridiculous,” he commented.
Neither JAY-Z nor Kendrick Lamar have addressed the backlash. Meanwhile, Kendrick released a new song that some think is a response to the controversy.
Lil Wayne’s candid reflection shows how deeply the snub affected him but also highlighted the immense support he received from his community.
