GloRilla has been recognized in her hometown of Memphis with a key to the city, an honor she received on the significant ‘901 Day.’
Home to the 901 area code, Memphis pulls out all the stops to celebrate ‘901 Day’ every September 1. This year, the honor was especially sweet as rapper GloRilla received a key to the city. Memphis Mayor Paul Young and fellow rapper Kia Shine were on hand to witness the celebration.
Sharing her joy on Instagram, GloRilla posted, “Memphis made me Frayser raised me [teary eyed emoji] I got da key to my cityyyyy ahhhhh [celebration emojis] Happy 901 day MEMPHIS!!!!!!”
Recently, GloRilla navigated a controversy with grace. She shared a song snippet on social media that included the word ‘retarded,’ which some fans found offensive. Conversations ensued, and when she released another teaser, the word had been replaced with ‘go naughty.’ Fans applauded her for the change, appreciating her sensitivity.
Responses poured in, with one fan writing, “I love how you changed the R word out the song. I wasn’t offended but that’s real.” Another commented, “Awwww she changed the lyrics just in case it did hurt someone’s feelings [clapping hands emoji] [praise hands emoji].”
Moreover, GloRilla addressed criticisms about her image. She posted a video rebuffing claims that her label was pushing her to sexualize her appearance. GloRilla explained, “Y’all had so much to say because I previewed an [inaudible] I was dancing to my song holding my titties. Don’t worry about what me and my titties doing. Bitch, I bought em.”
She continued, “Talking about some shit like, ‘Oh, the label is making GloRilla do this. Bitch, the label ain’t make me do shit. A hoe gonna be a hoe.” Laughing, she added, “It ain’t about no label trying to make me do shit. It’s about me looking for some hoes.”
GloRilla rounded off her message with, “Y’all always thought, ‘They tryna oversexualize Glo like she was such a tomboy. Bitch, I was a tomboy when I had no titties. I got titties now.”
GloRilla’s key to the city is a celebration of her roots and her journey as an artist. It’s clear this Memphis star is shining bright.
