G-Eazy has addressed the widespread fan belief that he ‘fell off’ from his prominent position in the Hip Hop industry, explaining that his step back was a voluntary choice.
In a candid interview with Steve-O’s Wild Ride, released on May 30, G-Eazy revealed that after years of intense work, he made the conscious decision to pull back temporarily. The rapper cited burnout and the passing of his mother in 2021 as pivotal reasons for needing a break. ‘So I was burning out, really,’ he admitted. ‘Like, when you go that hard for that long? And we had a great run. It was three albums in a row that went platinum, you know?’
He further explained, ‘It’s like overwhelming, overstimulated. And then, my mom passing and all that? I needed to reset from the business side of it. I changed management, I moved to New York … I had to grieve.’
This isn’t the first time G-Eazy has discussed his plans for a comeback following his mother’s death. Last year, he spoke with Something About Rocks about his mindset and future professional moves. ‘My intentions are clear,’ he stated. ‘I want to reclaim the spot that was mine and I’m coming for it with aggressive, direct intention, but you have to balance that with humility and self-awareness as well.’
Suzanne Olmsted, G-Eazy’s mother, passed away in late 2021, just two months after the release of his album These Things Happen Too. She was his biggest supporter, and he shared a heartfelt tribute to her on Instagram, writing, ‘The shock still won’t let me accept the feeling that I’ll never get to hug you in person again. My queen, my hero, my everything…my mom. The tears won’t stop. My eyes hurt, my face hurts, my body hurts, everywhere hurts. There’s no safe place to hide and there’s no way to lay, sit, or stand that doesn’t hurt. The pain is enormous. But I know you’re out of yours and that brings me peace.’
G-Eazy’s temporary retreat from the limelight appears to have been a necessary reset for his mental and emotional well-being. Fans can expect a determined and intentional comeback as he aims to reclaim his spot in the industry with a fresh perspective.
