Flo Milli, Tierra Whack, and Tems are among the dynamic female artists selected to participate in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series in celebration of Black Music Month. This year’s series, which features an all-female lineup, kicks off Monday, June 3rd.
“This Black Music Month, we’re giving the ladies their flowers!,” said host and series producer Bobby Carter. “We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music and others who are carving out their own paths. All of them are queens in their own right who represent a beautiful array of genres, generations, and walks of life.”
The star-studded lineup also includes legendary artists like Chaka Khan, Kierra Sheard, Lakecia Benjamin, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brittney Spencer, and SWV. Tiny Desk has been home to iconic Hip Hop performances over the years, with appearances by notable artists such as Action Bronson, Juvenile, Big Sean, Jeezy, and Scarface within the past year alone.
Scarface’s recent Tiny Desk performance left a lasting impression on fans globally, leading the Houston legend to embark on a Tiny Desk-themed tour. Reflecting on the significance of his performance, Scarface shared, “Let me tell you why this Tiny Desk was such a moment for me. Because Mike Dean actually played the parts in the [original] songs, so he knows the parts. You don’t have to teach him the parts, because those parts came from him.” The tour, called the Brad ‘Scarface’ Jordan Behind The Desk Experience, spanned 25 days and ended in Charlotte, NC, on April 14.
With an impressive lineup celebrating the contributions of Black women in music, this year’s Tiny Desk Concert series is set to be a memorable tribute to the queens of various musical genres and eras.
