Eminem is gearing up big time for his new album, The Death of Slim Shady. Following the eye-catching announcements and promos, the rapper has now revealed that his new single, ‘Houdini,’ will drop on May 31.
In a recently released social media promo, Eminem Facetimed magician David Blaine, praising him as the greatest of all time in the magic world. They briefly discussed a collaboration, with Blaine impressively eating a glass after drinking wine. Yet, Eminem had something even bigger in mind. ‘Well for my last trick,’ he said to Blaine, ‘I’m going to make my career disappear.’ Blaine was left dumbfounded as Eminem hung up, cutting to the release date for ‘Houdini.’
The album’s promotional materials and its title suggest Eminem might be saying goodbye to his alter ego, Slim Shady. He’s hinted at retirement before, telling Vibe back in 2010 that he wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep rapping. ‘I don’t know how much longer I have in this game,’ he admitted. ‘I’m always going to love hip-hop. But how much longer am I going to still do it? I couldn’t give you an answer. But the day that this is not better than the last will probably be the day I stop.’
Eminem has always found solace in recording music, even if he eventually stops releasing it. ‘I know it always makes me feel better to lay things to tape,’ he said. It seems that ‘Houdini’ might indeed mark the beginning of the end for both Eminem and his famous alter ego, Slim Shady.
Mark your calendars for May 31 when ‘Houdini’ drops. It could be the final chapter in Eminem’s storied career.
