Dr. Dre is not a fan of too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to producing rap albums.

  • The legendary producer believes one or a few producers should handle an entire album for continuity.
  • Despite using co-producers himself, Dre prefers a tight-knit team like his early days with Eminem and N.W.A.
  • In a chat with Stephen A. Smith, Dre shared he never replays his old tracks, focusing on what’s next.
  • Snoop Dogg joined the conversation, highlighting the abundance of beatmakers today compared to seasoned producers.

Dr. Dre, the iconic producer, recently expressed his disapproval of the growing trend of rap albums featuring numerous producers. He argued that having just one or a small team of producers ensures album continuity, a principle he has upheld from the beginning of his career.

During an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Dre was candid about his distaste for what he sees as an over-saturated production style in today’s hip-hop. When asked about the origin of this trend, Dre admitted, “I don’t know, but I don’t like it.”

Dre contrasted today’s scene with his early days, where he often served as the sole or lead producer on major projects like Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle and Eminem’s first five albums. This approach, he believes, is what production is truly about.

Snoop Dogg, who was present during the interview, pointed out that while creating beats has become simpler, true producers who manage entire projects are scarce.

Interestingly, despite being a legendary artist himself, Dre revealed he never revisits his classic music, claiming he’s always looking forward. “I don’t live my life with a rear-view mirror,” he stated, emphasizing his forward-thinking mindset.

Dr. Dre stands firm on valuing quality over quantity in music production, a principle he believes sustains artistic integrity.
