Doechii’s four Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album and Best New Artist, might seem shocking to outsiders, but the rapper isn’t surprised.
In a chat with Jeremy Hecht at the Give Her FlowHERS gala in Los Angeles, Doechii candidly shared, ‘I’m having déjà vu — it feels like I’ve been here before. I feel like I’ve received this before. So I feel aligned.’ The feeling of recognition is palpable for the rising star.
Doechii believes her labelmate ScHoolboy Q also deserved some recognition. ‘He deserved that spot as well,’ she asserted, emphasizing the strength of both of their projects.
The rapper’s success has been bolstered by none other than Kendrick Lamar, who praised Doechii as the ‘hardest’ in the game on his Instagram. This sort of validation from a giant in the industry is no small feat.
In response, Doechii expressed her gratitude through her own social media, writing, ‘Thank you Dot. You the greatest,’ followed by a reflective note on appreciation: ‘Getting your flowers while you can still smell them >>>.’
Doechii has also expressed a desire to collaborate with Lamar, although she admits that she doesn’t feel ready yet. Speaking on The Joe Budden Podcast, she said, ‘I don’t assume anything and I also don’t feel entitled to a Kendrick feature, but I would absolutely love that. That’s the goal.’
She acknowledged, ‘I’ma be real, I don’t think I have the record right now for that opportunity. I think I would have to come a certain way and I don’t think I’m ready for that.’
For Doechii, the Grammy nominations are not just accolades but a feeling of alignment and recognition that her hard work aligns with the industry’s appreciation. Meanwhile, her journey continues as she aims for further collaboration and growth.
