DL Hughley took to X (formerly Twitter) to fire shots at Janet Jackson after the iconic singer stirred the pot by claiming that Vice President Kamala Harris isn’t Black.
Hughley, always known for his sharp wit, wasted no time in mocking Jackson’s statements. He quipped, “Janet Jackson’s interview sounded like a #Trump rally! FYI!! It’s a little ironic to question whether someone is Black while you’re breathing through the nose of a white woman! #TeamDl,” referring to Jackson’s plastic surgery.
Not stopping there, Hughley added fuel to the fire by posting, “Kamala Harris looks the way she does cuz she has a mom from India and a dad from Jamaica! Janet Jackson looks the way she does cuz she has a plastic surgeon! #TeamDl.” He even threw in, “All I know is Kamala looks like she did when she was in Oakland! But Janet don’t look like she did when she was Penny! What the hell was in that iron??”
Meanwhile, Janet Jackson’s original comments came during an interview with The Guardian. She questioned Harris’s ethnicity, saying, “Well, you know what they supposedly said? She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.” When informed that Harris is both Black and Indian, Jackson countered, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
Hughley’s remarks garnered attention, especially considering his strong support for Harris at the recent Democratic National Convention. Harris, known for her diverse heritage with an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, has often been at the center of discussions about race and identity. Jackson’s comments, however, seemed to miss the mark, given the clear information about Harris’s background.
DL Hughley’s reaction to Janet Jackson’s comments has certainly sparked a lively debate online. As the conversation around race and identity continues, it’s clear that public figures will always be held to account for their words.
