Dame Dash has some strong words for John Legend regarding his label choices in the early 2000s.
- Dash claims Legend was supposed to sign with Roc-A-Fella but chose sneaky actions instead.
- Legend’s decision to sign with Sony instead of Roc-A-Fella didn’t sit well with Dash.
- Despite not signing with Roc-A-Fella, Legend maintained ties with Kanye West’s GOOD Music.
- Legend and Kanye’s relationship later soured over political differences, affecting their friendship.
Dame Dash recently expressed discontent towards John Legend over a label decision that happened years ago. In an interview, Dash stated he expected Legend to sign with Roc-A-Fella in the early 2000s. According to him, Legend’s choice to sign with Sony was unexpected and sneaky.
Dash mentioned he had taken Legend on tour with Kanye and supported him, firmly believing Legend would join the Roc-A-Fella family. However, Legend’s decision to partner with Sony came as a surprise and disappointment to Dash.
Legend, nonetheless, continued his association with Kanye West and was the first artist signed to Kanye’s GOOD Music label. His debut album, ‘Get Lifted,’ was released through a joint venture between Sony and GOOD Music, and his collaboration with Kanye remained strong, at least initially.
Over the years, however, Legend and West’s friendship faced challenges, primarily due to conflicting political views. When Kanye decided to run for president in 2020, Legend did not support him, which further strained their relationship.
Legend acknowledged in a 2022 interview that their friendship was affected more by political disagreements than anything else. He explained that his support for Joe Biden and lack of support for Kanye’s presidential run was the primary reason for their fallout.
Kanye also mentioned this tension, accusing both Legend and Big Sean of being used by the Democrats against him. He believed they were quick to distance themselves from him during his political pursuits.
Dame Dash’s reflections highlight the complex dynamics of friendships and business decisions in the music industry.
