Dame Dash wasted no time firing back at JAY-Z after the rapper made a legal move regarding the copyright of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Hov’s legal team argues that the album’s copyright will revert back to him in 2031, regardless of who holds the record label.
Dash didn’t hold back on Instagram, commenting, “They can say what they want, this shit is still for sale. You’re not buying a copyright, you’re buying a piece of a company ROC A FELLA INC.”
He also reiterated that his one-third stake in Roc-A-Fella is still up for grabs, adding, “Please only serious inquiries only!”
Dash’s 33.3 percent stake in Roc-A-Fella will be auctioned off in New York City on August 29. Proceeds from the sale will go towards the $823,000 he owes movie producer Josh Weber from a lawsuit over the 2016 film Dear Frank.
Earlier this year, after a judge mandated that Dash sell his shares to pay his debt, both JAY-Z and Roc-A-Fella’s other co-founder, Kareem “Biggs” Burke, opposed the decision. They argued that company bylaws require the board to first approve any stake sale.
However, U.S. Magistrate Robert W. Lehrburger ruled the shares could be seized to cover the debt since they are Dash’s personal property. Lehrburger criticized Jay and Biggs for creating a no-sell clause during a 2021 board meeting that Dash didn’t attend.
Lehrburger ordered Roc-A-Fella to hand over Dash’s stock certificate to the U.S. Marshals Service within 180 days for auction. Jay and Biggs’ main concern wasn’t about supporting Dash but about an outsider potentially buying Roc-A-Fella’s intellectual property. Lehrburger said they could avoid that by participating in the auction and placing the winning bid.
The minimum bid for Dash’s shares is set at $1.2 million, which would easily cover his debt. It’s still unclear if JAY-Z and Biggs will be bidding at the auction.
As the auction date approaches, all eyes will be on whether JAY-Z and Biggs will step in to keep Roc-A-Fella’s legacy within the original founders. With a minimum bid of $1.2 million, it’s a high-stakes situation loaded with history and drama.
