Before Brent Faiyaz became an R&B sensation, he had his heart set on a different musical path. Here’s a closer look at the journey that led him to success.

  • In a recent chat, Faiyaz revealed his initial dream was to be a rapper.
  • He used to distribute CDs at school and make his own beats.
  • The shift to singing was strategic due to the flooded rap market.
  • Even though he pursued rap, R&B brought him the fame he loves today.

Brent Faiyaz recently shared that he originally aimed for a career in rap before finding success in R&B. On an episode of LeBron James’ ‘The Shop’, Faiyaz discussed his career evolution. He noted that his choice to switch was practical, given the saturated rap scene.

‘There are so many rappers though, I can sing so I might as well be a singer,’ he said. Faiyaz believed that adding singing to his repertoire would speed up his entry into the music industry.

Paul Rivera and Maverick Carter, co-hosts of ‘The Shop,’ asked if rapping had always been his dream. ‘My whole life I wanted to be a rapper,’ Faiyaz confirmed. He even passed out CDs in school and made and sold his own beats, proving his dedication.

Though Faiyaz was a ‘super rap kid’, his successful pivot to R&B has certainly paid off. His song ‘Best Time’ from his 2023 mixtape, ‘Larger Than Life’, highlights his adaptation to crooning, featuring visuals of his lavish lifestyle.

The transition has not only brought him acclaim but also exciting collaborations. His mixtape includes features from industry heavyweights like A$AP Rocky, Missy Elliott, Babyface Ray, Coco Jones, and A$AP Ant. Timbaland also makes a notable appearance.

A visual for his track ‘WY@’ featured actress Lupita Nyong’o. The teaser for this video caused quite a stir among his fans, with many expressing their excitement and jealousy on social media.
