On July 18, Big Sean debuted the trailer for his highly-anticipated sixth studio album, Better Me Than You. The trailer, which followed a leaked version of the album, featured psychedelic visuals and an unreleased song bursting with a funky bassline, spacey synths, and pounding percussion. However, the most intriguing part was the set of four pie-shaped charts shown at the end.
In a new clip on July 23, Big Sean took to social media to demystify these charts. He explained, ‘When I was making this album, I was going through, I felt like, the same four emotions, really.’ These hand-drawn charts were animated to represent the distinct moods and emotions he experienced while creating the album. ‘I was under a lot of pressure,’ he continued, ‘but going through that pressure led to clarity, which then led to happiness, only for the cycle to repeat.’
Meanwhile, the album announcement came with the release of his new single “Yes.” In this track, Sean doesn’t hold back, aiming straight at the competition. He raps, ‘I would rather give y’all my soul, I don’t have to sell it/ Might take a piss off your rap Mount Rushmore after I scale it.’ He also name-drops JAY-Z, hinting at his lofty status in the rap game.
On the flip side, the album’s leak stirred some controversy, with rumors suggesting the leak was tied to tensions with Kanye West. The person responsible for the leak claimed it was in response to perceived slights against Kanye in Sean’s recent freestyle. Speculations swirled, but Sean seemed unfazed. He took to social media and wrote, ‘Might as well start droppin, before they leak it all, got damn. BIG SEAN x THE ALCHEMIST soon.’
Better Me Than You will feature collaborations with artists like Nas, Brent Faiyaz, Charlie Wilson, The-Dream, and Sean’s girlfriend, Jhené Aiko. The leaked files included 14 tracks, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. Whether Kanye was involved in the leak remains unclear. Nevertheless, the album’s official release on August 9 is eagerly awaited by fans.
Big Sean’s upcoming album is shaping up to be a complex, emotionally charged masterpiece that’s already turning heads.
