Hip-hop fans, mark your calendars! On Saturday, September 28, Memphis will officially rename the corner of Park Avenue and Airways Boulevard in honor of the legendary rap duo 8Ball & MJG. This intersection will be known as 8Ball Boulevard and MJG Avenue.
The duo has long celebrated their neighborhood, Orange Mound, in their music. This recognition is a significant nod to their roots and the impact they’ve had on their community.
8Ball took to Instagram to express his heartfelt thanks, saying, ‘Thank you Memphis. Thank you Orange Mound. The love is appreciated! Never got many accolades, so this hit different mane you hear me.’ His gratitude extended to everyone who made the honor possible.
In 2018, 8Ball & MJG were inducted into the Memphis Hall of Fame, becoming only the second hip-hop act to receive this accolade. The first was Three 6 Mafia, inducted in 2012. 8Ball celebrated this moment with a shout-out to his fellow Memphis music icons.
The duo’s influence began in 1993 with their debut album ‘Comin’ Out Hard.’ Their last new collaborative project, ‘Ten Toes Down,’ came out in 2010, followed by a 2019 live album ‘Classic Pimpin’ featuring their classic hits.
8Ball & MJG showed they still had it in 2022 during a Verzuz battle against UGK that drew over 80,000 viewers, including hip-hop heavyweights like Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri. Fans were treated to Southern rap classics and unforgettable moments.
During the Verzuz event, 8Ball also set the record straight on a story told by Gillie Da Kid. He clarified that he and MJG never had a run-in with Rap-A-Lot Records founder J. Prince and demanded the narrative be corrected.
The renaming of the intersection in Orange Mound is a testament to 8Ball & MJG’s lasting legacy in Memphis and the larger hip-hop community. Their contributions to music and culture continue to be celebrated and remembered.
8Ball & MJG’s lasting impact on hip-hop and their community is now forever etched in Memphis with their own intersection.
