Benzino got a big surprise when he found out his daughter Coi Leray is expecting a baby with Trippie Redd.
On the ‘We In Miami’ podcast, the ex-Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star said, “I’ma be a grandfather! Wow.” He only found out about the pregnancy when everyone else did, and hopes it will mature Coi and help her understand his experiences as a parent.
Benzino shared that the public perception of their relationship is skewed, as details of their connection before Coi became a rap star were not well-known. Despite their differences, he is confident his grandchild will know him and understands the importance of keeping personal conflicts separate from the relationship with his grandchild.
Coi announced her pregnancy on New Year’s Day with Instagram posts featuring her baby bump and Trippie Redd. “I’m a rock star mommy, we ready for 2025,” she captioned.
Their father-daughter relationship took a hit after Benzino’s controversial comments about R. Kelly in May 2024. Coi’s reaction was strong, as she clearly distanced herself from her father on social media, emphasizing a lack of respect and connection due to his views.
In the same podcast episode, Benzino admitted the difficulty of the situation, highlighting generational differences, “Coi is a young lady, she independent.” He struggles with respecting her independence while wanting to connect, adding the challenge isn’t exclusive to Coi but affects relationships with his other daughters too.
After Benzino’s remarks about R. Kelly, Coi stated publicly, “I want nothing to do with anything my father has going on.” She distanced herself from his views and interviews, stating that family is built on loyalty and respect, not just shared DNA.
Despite their strained relationship, Benzino hopes to be involved in his grandchild’s life, recognizing the challenges that lie ahead.
