Snoop Dogg recently dropped a bombshell about his decision to acquire Death Row Records and how it ruffled feathers, especially with his longtime mentor, Dr. Dre.
Snoop shared in a recent interview that Dr. Dre wasn’t thrilled with his purchase of Death Row Records. The iconic rapper explained that Dre and others were cautious, viewing the acquisition as a risky move due to the label’s troubled financial past.
Death Row Records has a complicated history. It faced bankruptcy in 2006 and shuffled ownership several times, eventually ending up under eOne Music before Snoop stepped in. When Snoop took over, the label was struggling financially and reputation-wise, making his decision seem puzzling to many.
“To them, it looked like, ‘Why is he buying a bag of problems when he’s already successful?'” Snoop explained the skepticism he faced, especially from Dre. However, for Snoop, it wasn’t just a business decision. It was about legacy and unfinished business.
“I wanted to put some life into Death Row—some beautiful music and happy moments to redefine what it stood for,” Snoop expressed. Over time, his vision began to resonate with Dr. Dre, who started supporting Snoop’s venture.
Snoop proudly noted that Dre eventually became one of the label’s biggest advocates. “He loves it now,” Snoop said, revealing that Dre even requested a Death Row jacket, showing his full support for the label’s revival.
Under Snoop’s leadership, the label welcomed back artists like The Eastsidaz and Tha Dogg Pound. Additionally, they’ve added new talents like R&B artist October London, marking a fresh chapter for Death Row Records.
Snoop and Dr. Dre collaborated on a new album, ‘Missionary,’ under the Death Row banner, signaling the label’s strong comeback in today’s music scene.
Snoop Dogg’s move to revive Death Row Records faced skepticism initially, but his passion transformed doubts into support, notably from Dr. Dre, showcasing the power of vision in changing perspectives.
