Jay Rock was taken by surprise when Kendrick Lamar unexpectedly released a new album. He had no idea that Kendrick would be dropping the album or that it would feature him and the other Black Hippy members in ‘The Heart Pt. 6.’
The track is part of a song that samples SWV’s ‘Use Your Heart,’ where Kendrick looks back at the early days of TDE with Jay, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and those who supported their beginnings. Kendrick shares that the initial mission was to launch Jay first and acknowledges the lack of output from the now-defunct Black Hippy.
While appearing on Power 106’s Brown Bag Morning Show, Jay Rock shared his genuine reaction to the song. He remarked, “He gave it straight up, no chaser. That’s all truths right there. Everything he said in that record was truth.”
Jay recounted how he learnt of the album after receiving numerous tags on Twitter, initially mistaking the news for AI-generated content. Upon realization, he conveyed his admiration, texting Kendrick, “You did your stuff! I heard it from top to bottom. It’s no skips. He did his stuff again.”
In the song, Kendrick raps, “I jog my memory, knowin’ Black Hippy didn’t work ’cause of me…” unveiling the creative journey and strategizing sessions they had to conquer the music scene.
Meanwhile, Ab-Soul responded to his mention during an Instagram Live, expressing his deep connection with Kendrick. “I’m very honored, that’s my brother in real life,” he revealed, emphasizing the profound impact Kendrick had on his professional life.
Ab-Soul further claimed his title as the “best rapper” humbly during the stream, pointing out the strong camaraderie among the group members during their early struggles. “We really slept on the floor for this, all of us. Dot, [Jay] Rock, [ScHoolboy] Q, Sounwave,” he recalled.
Jay Rock’s surprise at Kendrick Lamar’s album highlights the enduring bond and shared history among Black Hippy members.
