Doechii recently graced ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ showcasing what she calls the ‘future of Hip Hop.’ Her captivating set included a medley of tracks from her acclaimed mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, leaving the audience in awe.

During her performance, Doechii included quotes from the iconic MF DOOM, creating a heartfelt homage to the late rapper. She opened and closed her act with words from his 2011 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, enriching the emotional depth of the performance.

Her performance wasn’t just about the music. Doechii choreographed the entire show herself, crafting a visual and sonic tribute to Hip Hop and black women. On social media, she shared, “I felt heavily inspired by the lineage of Hip Hop and how it contributes to who I am today.” This personal touch added layers of meaning to her already vibrant showcase.

Aiding in this artistic journey was hair artist Malcolm Marquez, who helped bring symbolic art to life in just a week. Doechii took the opportunity to shout out inspirations like Solange and Carlota Guerrero. She also thanked stylist Sam Woolf for translating her vision of Hip Hop into a striking visual statement through clothing.


On social media platform X, she voiced her thoughts: “This is my take on the future of Hip Hop. This is blackness. This is luxury. This is history.” Her words echoed the essence of her performance, which was all about tradition meeting modernity in the world of Hip Hop.

Doechii has always admired legends of the genre. In an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, she shared her appreciation for artists like MF DOOM, Westside Gunn, Tyler, The Creator, and JAY-Z. Reflecting on JAY-Z’s work, she said, “Everybody knows he’s crazy but damn! Hearing his growth?! Wow, so incredible. He’s so cool.” These influences clearly shape her craft.
