Fat Joe, a name synonymous with hip hop legacy, has announced his upcoming album, ‘The World Changed On Me,’ capturing not just beats but emotions. Scheduled for a December 13 release, this album pays homage to his brother Angel, who passed away on Thanksgiving. Joe unveiled the cover art featuring a poignant photograph of himself and Angel.
Angel, fondly remembered as a DJ from the Bronx, played a crucial role in the early stages of Hip Hop. Joe recounted, “[W]hen he would go DJ at the legendary jams, my brother would carry milk crates that had vinyl,” reminiscing about how Angel’s efforts laid the groundwork for Joe’s own journey in music.
Addressing his brother’s passing on Instagram, Joe expressed his gratitude and sorrow, writing, “On the AM of Thanksgiving, my Big Brother Angel aka the Money Man Passed Away.” His heartfelt words, “You Walked so that the Terror Squad could run,” encapsulate the deep personal loss and immense respect Joe holds for Angel.
In addition to familial influence, Joe revealed he draws inspiration from heavyweight icons like Nas, JAY-Z, and Eminem. During an Instagram Live chat with Michael Rainey Jr., Joe shared, “Whenever I make an album, I always put up a poster of Nas, a poster of JAY-Z and one of Eminem. And I be like, ‘Yo, I gotta be as good as them or even better.’
Moreover, Joe’s journey through the year hasn’t been without its challenges. Back in July, he shared his evolving connection with peers like Nas, DJ Premier, LL Cool J, Common, and Pete Rock, all releasing new works in 2024. The initial buzz of his album’s August release was delayed, but December now marks a significant arrival.
Joe, known for his dedication to the art form, hasn’t released an album since 2021. Despite declaring a pause on new material, the emotional and inspirational weight of this new album marks a compelling return.
This album not only honors Angel but also reflects Joe’s passion for music and continuous drive to match and exceed the legends he admires.
With ‘The World Changed On Me’, Fat Joe not only gifts fans a new album but also a piece of his heart.
