Jamie Foxx is back on stage, facing an experience that could have taken it all away. In his upcoming Netflix special, he revisits the harrowing health scare that left him hospitalized in 2023.
Foxx’s new comedy special, described as a ‘humorous but emotional one-man show,’ marks his return to comedy. However, the journey to bring his story to the stage was far from easy. He revealed that reflecting on his ordeal ‘was an excruciating time,’ as he relived those tense moments every night for three consecutive shows in Atlanta.
Foxx opened up backstage after his final taping, sharing the challenges of addressing such a personal experience. ‘The worry is what gets you,’ he said. The fear of revisiting those moments and wondering how the audience would react weighed heavily on him.
The comedian explained that typically a stand-up special involves working on material for an extended period before taping. This time, however, he dove right in, adding to the emotional weight of the project. Foxx humorously hinted that his future performances might stick to lighter topics like ‘Knock, knock’ jokes.
In April 2023, Foxx’s health took a sudden turn when he was hospitalized due to a ‘medical complication.’ His daughter, Corrine, reported that he was already recovering well due to swift medical care. Yet, the nature of his condition was a mystery until July, when Foxx mentioned taking an Advil for a headache and waking up 20 days later with no memory of what happened.
Reflecting on the episode, Foxx shared intriguing insights into his hospital experience. He even joked about a moment of uncertainty in his recovery, envisioning a devilish figure beckoning him onward. Despite the gravity of his situation, Foxx managed to keep his humor intact.
Foxx has previously spoken openly about the ordeal, which initially left him unable to walk and gave him a sobering glimpse of his mortality. He described seeing ‘the tunnel’ and noted, ‘I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy.’
Through humor and vulnerability, Jamie Foxx turns a near-fatal experience into art, hoping to close that chapter of his life with laughter. His new special is a testament to resilience and the healing power of comedy.
