DaBaby has unveiled a powerful mental health initiative, DaBabyCares, to honor his late brother Glenn Johnson, who tragically died by suicide in 2020.
The North Carolina rapper introduced this initiative during Suicide Prevention Month. DaBabyCares aims to raise awareness, dismantle the stigma around mental health, and provide essential resources for both youth and adults.
In collaboration with Mental Health America of Central Carolinas, DaBabyCares offers a free downloadable resource toolkit called ‘Youth Mental Health 101 Resource Guide.’
On Instagram, DaBaby shared his personal struggles: ‘To keep it real I been thrown off mentally & spiritually since we lost big bruh. The only thing kept me strong was the kids!’ He emphasized the need for children to be just that—children.
DaBaby elaborated, ‘With that being said I know from experience that the majority of mental health issues come from unchecked childhood trauma & in honor of my brother, my nieces & nephew… I wanted to provide the resources and create a safe space where it’s REALLY NEEDED for the ones struggling with mental health. Specifically targeting Black Males & the Youth!’
Following his brother’s death, DaBaby was vocal about his grief, using Instagram to connect with his fans. He quoted a line from his 2017 song ‘INTRO,’ highlighting his deep family ties: ‘My brother be thinkin’ that we don’t love him and let him struggle like we ain’t family.’
DaBaby also shared his own journey towards mental health, revealing he has been seeking therapy to cope with the tragedies he’s experienced, including the loss of his father in 2018. ‘If you can’t get over depression GET HELP,’ he urged his followers on X.
Amidst his personal struggles, DaBaby has continued to encourage his followers to seek help for mental health issues such as PTSD. He reiterated, ‘You suffer from PTSD take that shit serious & get help. I’m bouta get a therapist my damn self! #LongLiveG.’
Baby had been visiting polling stations in North Carolina when he learned of his brother’s death. Glenn Johnson, overwhelmed with emotional distress, had shared a video on social media just before his tragic passing.
