Drake and Benny The Butcher have finally shared their much-anticipated track ‘Buffalo Freestyle,’ three years after a snippet first made its way online. Part of Benny’s new EP, Buffalo Butch, Vol. 1, the song has fans buzzing.

Years before its release, Benny had hinted at a collaboration with Drake. The wait is over, and the track meets the hype with a moody, skeletal beat accentuating their lyrical prowess.

Drake kicks off the freestyle, referencing his career and former labelmate Nicki Minaj. ‘I’m iller than the illness that these people wish me / Drake be Joshin’ around, but life wasn’t Nickelodeon or Disney, is you kiddin’ me? / My résumé is thicker than Nicki, I’m busy-busy.’

Benny follows up with a heartfelt verse about his journey and struggles: ‘Soldiers is dead, spilled blood over this bread / Had my family thinkin’ I’m in over my head / Baggin’ up breathin’ chemicals, when a key was the pinnacle / Now at my high schools giving speeches, speakin’ political.’

The excitement around ‘Buffalo Freestyle’ was palpable, especially after expectations it would feature on Drake’s 2021 album, Certified Lover Boy. Benny explained, ‘Drake is Drake. He’s the biggest artist in the world, so ain’t no telling where that song gonna land.’

However, despite the hype, the song never made it to Certified Lover Boy. Addressing this, Benny noted, ‘It definitely would have fit in and definitely would have mixed things up, but I also see why he didn’t put it on.’

Last year, Benny expressed his frustration about the song’s delay with Joe Budden: ‘I was pissed, I’m not gonna lie. I was pissed, man. It’s a fucking Drake record! It was surely my biggest record … And the record’s just sitting in my pocket.’

Understanding the intricacies of release schedules, Benny acknowledged, ‘That’s the biggest artist in the world so I understand his release schedule might be hectic or he might have people that be like, ‘We can’t drop that right now because we doing this.’’

‘Buffalo Freestyle’ is finally here, and it’s everything fans anticipated.
