Olympic breakdancer Raygun, born Rachael Gunn, found herself at the center of a social media storm after her unconventional performance at the 2024 Games in Paris. Rather than traditional breakdancing moves, Raygun opted for creativity and artistry, even though it cost her in points.
Speaking to ESPN, Raygun explained, “What I wanted to do was come out here and do something new and different and creative — that’s my strength, my creativity.” She knew she couldn’t compete with the power moves of other competitors, so she aimed to showcase her artistic flair instead.
However, her performance, which included a much-mocked bunny hop, received a barrage of criticism. Viral videos with commentary from shows like Family Guy and comparisons to the Grinch soon followed, adding fuel to the fire.
Social media was ablaze with reactions, from laughing emojis to shocked faces. Even Pete Rock joined in, joking about the performance with his followers. Despite this, Raygun stood firm, maintaining that her goal was to bring something fresh and different to the global stage.
Amidst the online backlash, Raygun’s team rallied around her. Anna Meares, Australia’s chef de mission, praised her courage and character in a press conference, condemning the negative comments from internet trolls. According to Meares, Raygun embodied the Olympic spirit despite the criticism.
Raygun, who holds a PhD in dance, lost all three of her one-on-one contests by a wide margin of 54-0. Yet, she remains a beloved member of her team. Meanwhile, Japan’s Ami Yuasa took the gold in women’s breakdancing, and Canada’s Philip “Phil Wizard” Kim won the men’s title.
Raygun’s bold attempt at creative expression may have sparked controversy, but she stayed true to her vision and spirit.
