Uh-oh, hip-hop fans! A fiery debate sparked when Killer Mike’s new album, ‘Songs for Sinners and Saints,’ dropped on August 2. The commotion? A certain ‘Grammy winner’ lyric believed to be aimed at Travis Scott.
On the track ‘Still Talk’n That Shit,’ Killer Mike raps, ‘You gonna respect me like a motherfucking Grammy winner/ Like I cooked your favorite rapper like a granny dinner.’ Fans quickly interpreted this as a jab at Travis Scott.
Tensions were already high after Killer Mike swept three Grammy Awards for his album ‘Michael,’ leaving Travis empty-handed despite his nominations for ‘Utopia.’
Travis Scott’s manager, David Stromberg, wasn’t having it. He clapped back on Instagram, posting: ‘Macklemore and Cardi B tour selling out Chuck E Cheese karaoke nights near u.’
This didn’t sit well with Killer Mike’s camp. His manager, Chioke ‘Stretch’ McCoy, retaliated on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating: ‘Taking all fades with all managers for all our clients.’ Killer Mike himself shared the post, adding, ‘We Active!’
Meanwhile, Travis Scott has been vocal about his Grammy ambitions. Back in April, he opened up on LeBron James’ show, ‘The Shop,’ expressing his unwavering desire to win the prestigious award.
Despite being snubbed multiple times, Travis compared the Grammys to winning the Super Bowl. He said, ‘I don’t make music to win Grammys but it’s what that Grammy used to mean is what I always hold on to.’
Travis admitted that while some peers have become indifferent towards the awards, he still values the symbolic importance of winning a Grammy. ‘It gets rough at times but fuck, what the fuck?’ he concluded.
The back-and-forth between the managers of Travis Scott and Killer Mike brings an added layer of drama to an already competitive rap scene. Only time will tell if this feud will cool down or escalate further.
