DJ Polo, the iconic DJ renowned for his work with Kool G. Rap, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning, July 27. The news has sent waves of grief across the hip hop community.
According to Hot 97, the cause of DJ Polo’s death has yet to be disclosed. Social media quickly became a platform for tributes from some of hip hop’s biggest names.
DJ Chuck Chillout was among the first to express his sorrow, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram and Facebook with a photo of DJ Polo. “This Hurt real Bad RIP To DJ POLO,” he captioned.
Shortly after, Ice T and Eric B paid their respects. Eric B wrote, “My brother DJ POLO we had some great times you will never be forgotten GODS speed,” also sharing a photo of the late DJ.
The outpouring of grief continued with comments from E-40, DJ Green Lantern, DJ Scratch, DITC’s Buckwild, DJ Spinderella, and Pete Rock. Pete Rock emotionally stated, “Gotdamn man slow da f%#k down jesus christ lemme breathe.”
Even Big Daddy Kane, another member of the legendary Juice Crew, shared his tribute: “Gone but not forgotten Cuz!!! JUICE CREW FOR LIFE!” However, Kool G. Rap has not yet publicly commented on his former partner’s passing.
DJ Polo first attracted fans in 1986 through his incredible turntable skills on the track “It’s A Demo.” His work with Kool G. Rap led to four influential albums: “Road to the Riches” (1989), “Wanted: Dead or Alive” (1990), “Live and Let Die” (1992), and “Rated XXX” (1996).
The duo was not only known for their own albums but also as a vital part of the Juice Crew, shaping the sound of that era. After parting ways with Kool G. Rap, DJ Polo released a solo project, “Polo’s Playground.”
DJ Polo leaves behind two children. His legacy lives on through his music and the countless artists he inspired.
