Will Smith has made it official—after months of speculation, a new album is indeed on the horizon.
In an interview shared by the Instagram account Black Film Allies, Smith opened up about what fans can expect from his upcoming project. “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been in the studio,” he explained. “I have a project that is the most personal and powerful music project I’ve ever done. The idea of the music is, ‘Dance in your darkest moments.'”
Smith gave fans more to chew on with an Instagram post on Tuesday, where he previewed a new collaboration with Russ titled “Work Of Art.” The rapper excitedly shared, “I just finished my album.” The phrase “Dance in your darkest moments” appears to be the album’s theme, given that it already has its own Instagram page and website. This initiative aims to promote self-exploration, acceptance, and a celebration of life, inspired by Smith himself.
Meanwhile, Smith also recently reacted to Childish Gambino name-dropping him during an impassioned speech at the BET Awards. Gambino playfully compared his own award record to Smith’s, saying, “I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense. But I have the same amount of BET Awards as Sam Smith. Does that make sense to you guys?” Smith was seen laughing and clearly enjoying the commentary as he watched the speech backstage.
In other news, Smith performed his new gospel single “You Can Make It” at the BET Awards, a performance that demonstrated his versatility and commitment to diverse musical expressions. This mix of introspective lyrics and uplifting themes is something fans are looking forward to in his upcoming album, adding another layer to his nearly 20-year musical hiatus.
With his new project capturing some of his most personal and powerful work yet, fans have plenty to look forward to. Smith’s return to music seems poised to be both a celebration and an exploration of life’s ups and downs.
