Gucci Mane’s latest venture is already making waves, and it all started with an Instagram video on July 4th. In the clip, the rap mogul, surrounded by stacks of cash, announced the launch of his new label, So Icy Millionaires. The twist? He’s ready to dish out a million dollars each to the first male and female superstars who join his label.
“You got the Trap God right here. All these are $100,000 a pop,” Gucci Mane declared, holding the bundles of money. With each stack he counted, the excitement grew. “That’s what I’m willing to invest in my next superstar ’cause I’m starting a whole new label. Fresh! So Icy Millionaires.” The camera then turned to his wife, Keyshia Ka’Oir, who was counting an additional million dollars for the first female artist to sign on. “I got a million for my next female superstar. I got a million for my next male superstar. Who wanna join the So Icy Millionaires? Hit my DM right now,” Gucci added enthusiastically.
While the offer is undeniably attractive, there is some skepticism. Gucci Mane’s previous label, 1017 Records, has had its share of troubles. Several artists from the label have faced legal issues, including jail time for Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano, Hoodrich Pablo Juan, and Mac Critter. Tragically, former signee Enchanting passed away earlier this year at the age of 26 due to a drug overdose.
Commentators like Joe Budden have voiced concerns over Gucci’s talent scouting abilities. On his podcast, Budden noted, “We have never seen this many shootings, stabbings, clique beef, arrests, and RICOs in Hip Hop.” According to Budden, this troubling trend needs to be closely examined.
Gucci Mane, however, remains undeterred by the criticism. “I think that’s unfair for him to say, but I guess he’s entitled to his opinion,” he responded. “I’m not tryin’ to sign the guys who don’t need no help; I’m signing the guys who nobody wanna sign. Who saying like, ‘Ooh, you got a criminal record, we gon’ stay away from you’ — them the guys I’m giving a chance.”
Whether Gucci Mane’s bold new initiative will succeed or face the same issues as his past efforts remains to be seen. One thing is clear, though: the rap world is buzzing with anticipation. Aspiring artists, the opportunity of a lifetime might just be a direct message away. So, who’s ready to become a So Icy Millionaire?
