During a warm-up session for Team USA’s exhibition game against Serbia, Steph Curry didn’t hold back his feelings about Kendrick Lamar’s hit song “Not Like Us.” Standing beside his teammates LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Curry was overheard venting his frustration. “Damn with this song! It’s not the only song in America,” he said as the track blared through the speakers.
Curry’s offhand comment didn’t go unnoticed, especially by LeBron, who has openly supported Kendrick in the rapper’s ongoing beef with Drake. LeBron shot back, saying, “Personally, I love it.” Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar’s fans were quick to rally against Curry, flooding the NBA star’s Instagram with comments defending the track. One user wrote, “I know you didn’t mean that with Kendrick’s song. Cmon Steph. You play in the west coast,” while another added, “It’s the best song in America and u not like us.”
Jermaine Dupri also chimed in on the situation, noting the track’s street impact. “I just saw Steph’s reaction to the Kendrick record and I thought it was very ironic because what he is feeling (Pause) is a record impacting the streets and this new generation is not used to that. I’m sure many of y’all don’t understand what I’m saying, so let me know your thoughts!” Similarly, DJ Jazzy Jeff commented, “I think what the issue is we used to have a few songs with this impact at the same time to spread it out alil more…because we haven’t had a Lean Back or an In Da Club in so long.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Kevin Durant defended Curry, responding to Dupri’s post with, “Maybe bro just wanna hear another song…” While Curry’s honesty caused a stir, the song isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. “Not Like Us” recently reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and continues to break records, including becoming the fastest Hip Hop track to surpass 500 million streams on Spotify, outpacing Drake’s “God’s Plan.”
To add to Kendrick’s victories, he overtook Drake in monthly Spotify listeners for the first time ever. Despite Curry’s criticism, it seems “Not Like Us” will continue to dominate playlists and charts for the foreseeable future.
Whether you love it or hate it, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” has undeniably made waves. Steph Curry’s candid remark only added fuel to the fire, sparking debates among fans and fellow artists alike. Yet, the song’s success speaks for itself, ensuring it remains a staple on the airwaves for quite some time.
