Method Man has cleared the air about his remarks concerning his performance with Redman at this year’s Summer Jam Festival. When caught by TMZ, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper made it clear that he doesn’t blame the younger audience for their reaction.
‘I wasn’t mad at the crowd,’ Method Man stated, emphasizing that it was simply a ‘generation gap.’ He added that his goal was to support Mister Cee and New York, not incite any controversy. ‘I showed grace,’ he remarked, highlighting that he understood the difference in musical tastes between generations.
Although he received some criticism, Method Man found it unwarranted. ‘I don’t think it’s fair. I would never point my finger at the crowd for not liking my music…I was there for Mister Cee and it was New York. I figured, I’m in New York, I’m in my backyard. [People] know who I am.’
After his performance, Method Man took to social media to express his feelings, noting that the crowd wasn’t his typical audience. ‘Not our crowd at all,’ he wrote on Instagram. ‘Thanks again, New York and the whole tri-state (that showed up to the event) plus Peter [Rosenberg] and Ebro [Darden] I got love for you guys, but never again.. at this point the generation gap is just too wide for me.. #nevercomingback’
When TMZ spoke with Soulja Boy in Los Angeles about the situation, he offered his perspective, suggesting that Method Man might have been ‘in his feelings’ at the moment. ‘I don’t think he mean that. He probably just in his feelings,’ Soulja Boy said. ‘He probably gon’ perform at a future event, you know what I’m saying? But shout out to him.’
Soulja Boy noted the generational divide in New York’s hip-hop scene, saying, ‘Everybody supposed to know who he is.’ He acknowledged the legend status of Method Man and concluded, ‘He entitled to respond however he feel like. It’s gon’ be all good.’
Method Man’s comments highlight the challenges artists face when performing for diverse age groups. His decision to speak candidly about his experience at Summer Jam reveals his commitment to both his fans and his hometown of New York. Despite the generational differences, Method Man remains a respected figure in the hip-hop community.
